John Lawrence LeConte (* 13. máj 1825, New York, USA – † 15. november 1883, Philadelphia, USA) bol americký lekár a jeden z najvýznamnejších amerických entomológov 19. storočia. Svojimi aktivitami sa podieľal na popise a pomenovaní asi polovice druhov hmyzu v Severnej Amerike.

Biografia upraviť

John Lawrence sa narodil v New Yorku v rodine známeho prírodovedca John Eatton Le Conte. Ten ho vychovával sám, keďže jeho matka zomrela len pár mesiacov po pôrode. John Lawrence absolvoval Mount Saint Mary College v roku 1842 a College of Physicians and Surgeons v roku 1846. Po skončení štúdií na medicíne podnikol v roku 1849 niekoľko výprav na západ, vrátane cesty do Kalifornie cez Panamu. Keď bol v San Franciscu, poslal cca 10 000 ks chrobákov naložených v liehu svojmu otcovi. O ďalších cca 20 000 chrobákov prišiel pri požiari v roku 1852. LeConte aj často cestoval - do Európy, Egyptu a Alžíru. V roku 1852 sa odsťahoval do Philadelphie v Pensylvánii, kde žil až do konca svojho života. Počas rokov Americkej občianskej vojny pracoval ako chirurg u Kalifornských dobrovoľníkov, kde dosiahol hodnosť podplukovníka. V roku 1878 sa stal vrchným úradníkom (asistent riaditeľa) Mincovne Spojených štátov Amerických vo Philadelphii. Túto pozíciu zastával až do svojej smrti v roku 1883.

John Lawrence LeConte pôsobil aj ako viceprezident v American Philosophical Society (v rokoch 1880-1883), prezident American Association for the Advancement of Science (1873). Bol zakladateľom American Entomological Society a zakladajúcim členom National Academy of Sciences.

LeConte zbieral aj vtáky a informácie o nich pre Spencera Fullertona Bairda, ktorý bol jeho vzdialený bratranec, a neskoršie pôsobil ako riaditeľ Smithsonian Institution. Túto činnosť vykonával viac ako 39 rokov.

Ako protihodnotu Baird požiadal ostatných prírodovedcov, aby na svojich výpravách zbierali chrobáky pre LeContea.
