Kým predchádzajúce dva albumy nahral (s výnimkou bicích nástrojov) v prevažnej miere frontman Billy Corgan, na tomto albume sa pri nahrávaní výraznejšou mierou podieľali aj D'arcy Wretzky a James Iha.

Z albumu vyšlo päť singlov, „Bullet with Butterfly Wings“, „1979“, „Zero“, „Tonight, Tonight“ a „Thirty-Three“.

Bubeník Jimmy Chamberlin bol počas turné k tomuto albumu vyhodený potom, ako sa spolu s Jonathanom Melvoinom, koncertným hráčom na klávesy predávkovali heroínom, pričom Melvoin na následky predávkovania zomrel.
