Australopithecus afarensis zahŕňa aj nález [[TM 1511]], ktorý sa zvykol označovať ako [[Australopithecus transvaalensis]] alebo [[Plesianthropus transvaalensis]].
John Robinson v roku 1954 pridal do druhu Australopithecus africanus nálezy "z východnej Afriky" a zároveň rozdelil druh na dva poddruhy:
