Jeden z najuznávanejších britských hercov Michael Caine sa narodil 14. marca 1933 v londýnskom Southwarku kuchárke a upratovačke Ellen Frances Marie Micklewhite a jej manželovi Mauriceovi Josephovi, ktorý pracoval na trhu s rybami. Vychovávali ho v duchu protestantskej viery. Caine v Southwarku aj vyrastal, no keď prišla druhá svetová vojna, rodinu evakuovali do Norfolku a vrátili sa až po jej skončení. Kým sa pracovalo na rekonštrukcii zničeného Londýna, rodina dostala "stavebnicový" dom vyrobený v Kanade. Nakoniec tam žili osemnásť rokov, čo im však vôbec neprekážalo. "Po stiesnenom byte s toaletou, ktorá bola vonku, to bol luxus," vysvetlil Caine, ktorý po skončení štúdia chvíľu pracoval a v roku 1952 nastúpil na vojenskú službu. Herec na ňu nemá zlé spomienky, naopak tvrdí, že je pre mladých ľudí prospešná.

V posledných rokoch sa masovo pripomenul aj vbatmanovskej trilógii Christophera Nolana, ktorý ho obsadil aj do drámy Dokonalý trik či mimoriadne úspešného Počiatku.
Ukázal vo vyše 150 filmoch a seriáloch. Je jedným z dvoch hercov, ktorých nominovali na Oscara v každom desaťročí od 60. rokov, tým druhým je Jack Nicholson. Cenu Akadémie získal za filmy Pravidlá muštárne a Hana a jej sestry, nominovaný bol za snímky Tichý Američan, Rita, Stopár (z roku 1966) či Zlatíčko (Alfie).
Caine v minulosti prezradil, že vie, ako sa dá rozoznať dobrý herec - musia mu veriť, že hrá samého seba.
Keď sa starnúceho herca spýtali, ako vníma svoj vek, vyhlásil, že sa stále cíti na 38 - ak ho nenútia vybehnúť hore schodmi. Priznal však aj to, že čas letí veľmi rýchlo a to najmä preto, že sa nikdy nenudí.
Caine momentálne žije v anglickom Surrey, no vlastní aj byt na Floride a v blízkosti svojho rodiska. V rokoch 1955 až 1962 bol ženatý so spomínanou herečkou Patriciou Haines, s ktorou má dcéru. Neskôr chodil s Biancou Jagger. V roku 1971 sa zoznámil s modelkou Shakirou Baksh, s ktorou žije dodnes. Majú dcéru.
